What is a high octane rating?

26 01 2012Can anyone tell me what a high octane rating is in cars? I'm doing chemistry and in my textbook it says that 'oxgenates' are increasingly being added to increase their octane rating But isn't octane a hydrocarbon? There's no oxygen in octane which is why i'm confused that they're adding oxygen to increase the octane rating? Please help
